In 2002 another 700 acres was purchased (referred to as the Lake Land as it hosts the most magnificent 25-acre, spring-fed lake.) Later in 2003 the remaining land was purchased1800 acres which previously had been owned by a paper company. Nearly half of the timber had already been cut prior to the Sanctuary's purchase, but those areas will be converted into pastures for the elephants.
The elephants now have a 2700-acre natural-habitat preserve in which to live their lives. Now we have to raise the funds to pay for it.
Square Inch ~ Square Foot ~ Square Yard ~ Square Elephant Space...elephants thrive on it!
Rolling pastures, old growth forests, streams, springfed ponds... even a 25-acre lake. While all of this is vital to an elephant’s need to freely roam, it came at a humongous cost.
Here’s a way for you to help The Elephant Sanctuary fund the thousands of acres of land they acquired for their current and future elephant residents to enjoy. Your donation to our ‘Acres for Elephants’ capital campaign will help ensure the Sanctuary can secure forever the land the elephants need to stand, sleep and most importantly, roam.
You, or your group, can help us reach this goal by "purchasing" one or more:
Square Elephant (SqE) is the space required for an elephant to stand at rest, including trunk and tail—an area approximately 6 feet wide by 12 feet long.
Sleepy Square Elephant (SSqE) is the space necessary for an elephant to lie down and take a nap—an area approximately 9 feet x 14 feet.
Dumbo is an area about the size of a house at 1,440 square feet.
Jumbo is larger than the Dumbo at about 1/4 acre.
Mammoth is a full, one acre.
Note: Teachers and parents may access a PDF document which has been written as an accompanying guide for discussion with students about the environmental needs of elephants. Interesting activities are included in this four-page document. (Acrobat Reader is required to view it.)
